The directorate for Residency has existed since the establishment of Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) the creation of the parliament and the democratic process in (1992). Since Iraq freedom from in (2003), the region has developed and expanded.
As a result, the KRG decided that the residency service should expand to become a directorate, part of the General Directorate of Citizenship of the ministry of interior in the KRG.
As a result of economic growth, stable security and increased investment, the number of foreigners visiting the Kurdistan region is rising steadily. As a result, the ministry of interior extended the scope and authority of the residency service.
There are now three offices- in Erbil (Hawler), Duhok and Suleymaniah) Erbil is a capital of the Kurdistan region, receives the majority of foreign visitors.
The three residency offices give residency permission according to regulations issued by the KRG’s ministry of interior.

Short-term permissions for residency:

Short term residency is available to foreigners who wish to stay in Kurdistan for longer than the (15) days granted on entry and for up to 3 months. If the holder a residence card issued for this purpose leaves Kurdistan before it has expired, the card will be retained by immigration staff on departure. As fresh residency application should be made on returning to Kurdistan.

The residency permission periods, according to all regulations, instructions issued by interior ministry – KRG needs documents, which are:

  • A support letter form the applicant’s employer and the company registration document in Kurdistan.
  • A written personal guarantee from a person of Iraqi nationality who is a resident of the Erbil Governorate.
  • Evidence that the applicant has undertaken a blood test according to the procedures of the residence office. A form to obtain a blood test appointment can be collected from the residence office as part of the application process. The blood test result can usually be obtained within 2-3 days.

Long term permissions for residency:

Long term residency is available to foreigners who wish to stay in Kurdistan for between 6 and 12 months. Residence cards may be retained by holders leaving Kurdistan for short periods.

The requirements for obtaining residency are:

  • A support letter form the applicant’s employer and the company registration document in Kurdistan.
  • A written personal guarantee from a person of Iraqi nationality who is a resident of the Erbil Governorate.
  • Evidence that the applicant has undertaken a blood test according to the procedures of the residence office. A form to obtain a blood test appointment can be collected from the residence office as part of the application process. The blood test result can usually be obtained within 2-3 days.
  • Applicants who are citizens of (Asian or African) countries must also obtain approval from the ministry of labor.
  • Applicants from countries are needed approval from security establishments.

Application for importing foreigners by the companies:

  • The certifications of the company should be submitted
